Leather Care

How to Care for Your Lost Dutchman Leather Goods

Quality leather only gets better with age—but like anything worth keeping, it needs a little care along the way. Whether it’s your wallet, belt, or notebook cover, regular maintenance keeps leather looking its best and lasting for years (even decades). At Lost Dutchman Leather, we’re all about that long-haul quality. Here’s how to take care of your leather goods so they can age beautifully alongside you.

1. Keep It Clean

Over time, everyday use can cause dirt, oils, and grime to build up on the surface of your leather. A simple wipe-down with a clean, dry cloth can go a long way. For deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth—just don’t soak it. Leather doesn’t love water.

Avoid harsh chemicals or soaps. They can dry out the leather and strip away its natural oils. If you need a gentle cleaner, look for something specifically made for leather.

2. Condition Every 6–12 Months

Leather is skin, after all—it needs moisturizing. We recommend using Smith’s Leather Balm every 6 to 12 months, depending on how often you use the item and the climate you live in. If your leather feels dry or looks dull, it’s time to condition.

Smith’s is made with all-natural ingredients (like cocoa butter and beeswax) and won’t darken most leathers significantly. Just apply a small amount with your fingers or a soft cloth, let it absorb, and buff off any excess.

3. Don’t Let It Soak or Bake

Water and heat are two of leather’s worst enemies. If your leather gets wet, pat it dry gently and let it air dry naturally—never use a hairdryer or set it in the sun.

The same goes for heat exposure. Leaving your wallet on a hot dashboard or near a heater can dry it out and cause cracking over time.

4. Embrace the Patina

One of the best things about real leather is how it changes over time. With each scratch, scuff, and shine, it develops a rich patina that tells your story. That wear isn’t damage—it’s character.

A little attention a couple times a year can keep your gear looking sharp and feeling great for a lifetime. Whether you’re carrying one of our wallets every day or just breaking in a new belt, your leather is in it for the long haul.
